Community & Outreach

Science (only sometimes) happens in a vacuum!

I am happy to discuss geoscience with anyone. I also love listening to other people's stories about geology!

Collaboration within groups of diverse scientists is the only way to progress scientifically.

I am a Geoscience Ambassador - I originally wanted to be a professional dancer!

The Geoscience Ambassadors are undergraduate and graduate student scientists who are working to change assumptions about who gets to be a geoscientist and what geoscientists do. Check out my story of how I became a geoscientist on YouTube! Check out the other ambassadors here below -there are a lot of stories from military vets, international students, and more!

PhD Rhapsody Podcast

Here I talked to some of my Norwegian colleagues about my pathway to academia on their podcast. It is interesting to see the similarities and differences between PhDs in the US versus Europe or Australia!

In 2020-2021, my colleague, Megan Flansburg, and I were Lithospheric and Dynamic Earth Seminar co-chairs. This was a unique year in that it was entirely virtual, which allowed us to invite scientists from all backgrounds around the world.

I saw that my alma mater (@McGill U) created an informal talk series for international students to talk about their countries of origin. So my colleague, Eirini Poulaki, and I decided to create a similar series at UT Austin! The seminars promoted home cultures and created awareness about the different backgrounds of the UT community. We hope that this fosters a welcoming environment for international and minority students.  I learned so much from my peers and always left hungry (we talked a lot about traditions surrounding food).

I've had the honor of working with the GeoFORCE program at UT in a couple of different ways through the years...

As a GeoFORCE college mentor. Mentoring UT undergraduates participated in the GeoFORCE program in high school.

As a 10th-grade GeoFORCE co-instructor. Sadly, it was virtual otherwise, I would have gotten to take them to one of my impact craters- Meteor Crater in Arizona (pictured to the right)!

JSG Structural Geology Faculty Search Committee: I served as the Graduate Student Representative on the search committee to fill a position in Structural Geology in the Department of Geological Sciences at UT-Austin.

Graduate Student Executive Committee @ UT: I coordinated the GeoFORCE fundraiser. GSEC does a lot of amazing advocating for students and events; check it out below!
